How to Clear a Clogged Sink

The sink in my house, particularly the waste disposal and drain, is notorious for being difficult to maintain. It’s like dealing with a high-maintenance drama queen! Over time, I’ve had a few encounters with clogged pipes, so now I’m cautious about what goes down there. I avoid putting items like rice, eggshell fragments, and vegetable peels into the sink.

Let’s Talk About Washing Soda

While washing soda is commonly found in the laundry section of stores, its uses extend beyond just the washing machine. Let’s explore more about washing soda…

A few years ago, when I was less aware of the finicky nature of our drain, I made the unwise decision to dispose of a bunch of leftover cilantro stalks through the garbage disposal. (Yes, I admit that was a mistake!) As expected, the garbage disposal seemed to be working fine, but the water simply refused to drain. It felt like it was mocking me!

Fortunately, my spouse wasn’t home during this incident. I could almost hear his scolding if he had discovered the mess. So, in an attempt to avoid his lecture, I decided to try a technique I had come across on the internet to unclog the sink.

To my relief, it worked wonders! I managed to escape both the crisis and the lecture that day. The effectiveness of this method can be attributed to the fizzing and declogging reaction that occurs between vinegar and baking soda. This fizzy reaction helps break down any clogs in the pipes, and flushing it with hot water afterward washes away the obstruction. The result is a freely flowing drain and a sigh of relief!

An Easy Method to Unclog a Sink

You’ll need:

1 cup of white vinegar
1 cup of baking soda
A sink stopper
Boiling water

Instructions:

Step 1 – Add Vinegar & Baking Soda
Pour the vinegar down the sink drain. Then sprinkle the baking soda into the same drain and quickly seal it with the sink stopper. Keep the stopper in place until the fizzing subsides.

Step 2 – Wait
Once the fizzing has stopped, allow the sink to sit undisturbed for approximately 30 minutes.

Step 3 – Flush With Hot Water
After 30 minutes, bring a kettle or pot of water to a boil. Remove the sink stopper and carefully pour the boiling water into the drain. The hot water will help flush out any remaining clogs, as well as the residue of baking soda and vinegar.

Your sink should now be flowing freely!
