If your New Year’s resolution doesn’t include doing a juice cleanse or practicing mindfulness, then congratulations for being a unique thinker in 2017! Some of us just have classic goals, like, wanting to be tidier for instance. That’s why we’re sharing some great organizational tips with you to practice in the New Year. These tricks are so genius that they’ll easily slip into your routine in no time!
Today’s video comes to us from DoItOnaDime’s oh-so-positive host, Kathryn. This woman seriously loves preaching the gospel of keeping a neat space! So, leave it to her to inform us about the nuances of tidiness.
Neatness Vs. Organization
She explains that “being tidy and being organized are two different things.” Ok, we smell what she’s stepping in! Kathryn believes that tidying is simply “putting things away,” while organizing is “finding a system.”
Obviously, the latter here is the one in which all of us aspire! As our host so eloquently says, “When you’re organized, it means you can look at your house that isn’t perfectly tidy all of the time… but you can know that you can very quickly put all of those items away and access them again when you need to.”
Ok, we’re SOLD! I think it’s safe to say that all of us aspire to have a perfectly organized house, but it’s sometimes overwhelming when confronted with the nitty-gritty.

Allow Buffer Space
Let’s be honest, the longer you live in the same place, the more stuff you accumulate. It’s almost as if we all follow a primal need to fill up our spaces, without always realizing it.
Now, our host gets that—she clearly doesn’t want you trash stuff that you need—BUT, there is a way to systematize it!
The key here is to always allow “buffer space,” as she says. Follow your unique system, but take care that you do not fill your bins to the brim. If things are looking particularly packed, don’t shove and cram—just add more organizational implements. Smart, huh?

“Tidy-Up Basket” Method
Pressing ‘pause’ on your busy day to clean up is, sadly, not an option for most of us. And, any of you out there with kids know that relying on them to complete their chores is sometimes a dicey bet.
So, Kathryn suggests making what she calls a “tidy-up basket.” Throughout the day, she adds items that can be put away later, and, at the end of the night, she carries the basket around the house and returns the things to their rightful homes.
It’s so much easier than stumbling around with an arm full of unfolded clothes and toys. Brilliant!
