Fried bread is an indigenous American bread that spans generations past, particularly in the Navajo Nation that I grew up with. It is enjoyed throughout the United States and can be easily found throughout the Southwest. There is no need to search for it as it is surprisingly fast and easy to make at home.

There are many recipes for frying bread, depending on the region and tribe. It may be made with yeast and cornmeal, and some recipes add margarine, lard, or other fats, or contain an egg. Made with all-purpose flour and baking powder, this recipe makes baking very simple frying with no extra fat or eggs.

Once you learn how easy it is to make bread from scratch and how delicious fried bread is, you’ll find tons of ways to enjoy it. Fried bread is an excellent option to serve with creamy stew or hot pepper, and you can make fried bread tacos with ground beef and your favorite topping. It’s also a delicious snack when served with honey, maple syrup, fruit jam, or preserves.

This recipe makes four small loaves of toast. It can be easily expanded to a larger family.

Ingredients :

– 4 cups all-purpose flour

– 1 tablespoon of baking powder

– 1 teaspoon salt

– 2 tablespoons of powdered milk

– 1 1/2 cups warm water

– 1 cup margarine

– Extra flour to make your hands flour

Directions :

– Put flour in a bowl and add baking powder, salt and powdered milk.

– Mix in warm water to form a paste.

– Cover hands with flour

– Knead the dough by hand until it becomes soft but not sticky. Cover it with a piece of cloth and leave it for 15 minutes.

– Roll the dough into 2-inch balls, then roll the dough and spread it out.

– Melt margarine about an inch deep in the skillet. When the dough becomes hot in the pan.

– Frying one side to golden brown, and turnning over & fry other side.

– It can be covered with honey, powdered sugar, etc. You can also make it delicious by garnishing it with cooked sausage or fried eggs ….
