In celebration of Earth Day, I’d like to share a crochet pattern that promotes eco-friendliness. Consider making reusable crochet items to replace everyday disposable products such as dishcloths, washcloths, and face scrubbies. I already have patterns for those, so I decided to create one for a sweeper cover, suitable for sweepers like a Swiffer.

Numerous sweeper cover patterns are available, featuring a range of stitch patterns from highly textured to super basic, much like dishcloth patterns. I opted for simplicity in my design, primarily because sweeper sizes can vary among different brands. I wanted a pattern that could be easily customized for any sweeper; all you need to do is take a couple of measurements.

This cover is crafted using half double crochet stitches. It’s worked as a single piece, which is then folded over and stitched along the sides to create pockets that accommodate the sweeper.

This project is a quick and easy one, perfect for utilizing leftover cotton yarn. Instead of buying disposable pads, you can quickly crochet a couple of covers, use, wash, and reuse them.

How to Crochet a Simple Sweeper Cover

Finished size: Approximately 10″ x 5″ as written, but adaptable for other sizes

Materials:

1 ball of worsted weight cotton yarn
H crochet hook
Scissors

Instructions:

Begin by measuring the bottom of your sweeper to determine the necessary size of your cover. I used a Swiffer, and its bottom measured 10″ x 4.5″. Ensure your cover extends a couple of inches on each side beyond the bottom. My finished piece, before folding the edges, measured approximately 15″ x 4.75″.

Since the entire piece consists of half double crochet stitches, it’s simple to adjust the size to your specific needs.

(The beginning chain does not count as a stitch)

Chain 52

Row 1: Half double crochet (hdc) in the 3rd chain and in each subsequent chain to the end (50 hdc).

Row 2-12: Chain 2 (ch 2), hdc in each stitch to the end (50 hdc).

Finish off and cut the yarn.

Fold the short edges inward, folding 9 stitches on each side (count 9 stitches from the edge, and fold at that point—repeat on both sides).

Single crochet (sc) along the long edge, working through the two layers of the folded edge for the first 9 stitches, then 14 stitches in the middle (single layer), and the last 9 stitches through the folded layer on the other side, totaling 32 sc stitches.

Repeat this process along the other edge.

Finish off and weave in all loose ends.

To use, place the cover on your sweeper by inserting the ends into the pockets created by the folded edges. Enjoy a more eco-friendly and sustainable cleaning solution. Happy Earth Day!
